I am a sentimental fool!
At least when it comes to Christmas. At the age of 12 I designated myself the sole decorator of our home...to my mother's dismay I'm sure. Handmade "Merry Christmas" signs loosely cut from construction paper. Wreaths made from the local sappy pine trees. Tinsel strewn everywhere around the house. The ugliest little Charlie Brown tree cut from across the dirt road. And mixed tapes of Frank, Dean, the Chipmunks and Glen Cambell all conspired to make my mom dread December. But my parents were great. We had definite traditions involving family time, gifts and sing-a-longs that to this day warms me when November is coming to an end. Music was such a big part of my Christmas. My sisters always sang "Silver Bells" and "Tennessee Christmas" and my father was required to sing "Pretty Paper" with everyone taking a verse and playing one of a hundred different instruments. This is where I come from. This was the birth of my deep love of Christmas time. I've wanted to do Christmas CD for a long time but I wanted to the time to be right and the sound to be right. You see, a Christmas song has a certain "feel" that you absolutely MUST achieve. If not, it's just another song. Obviously the lyrics need to be about Christmas and paint a picture that sets the mood, but the textures and melodies and instrumentation need to be about Christmas as well. Try it sometime. Within the first 10 seconds of a great Christmas song you'll be able to recognize it as such before the words begin. With that in mind I decided to go in the direction of tradition and nostalgia. I've chosen to use a string quartet to accomplish that...hoping that each song on the record takes you back to a time when you have felt the love of your family, friends and most importantly your Savior. And in doing that it will remind us that love is still here for us if we just open our eyes. The title track, "This Time of Year", is a list of the things I love about Christmas which revolves around the warm memories of being around loved ones, reaching out to our neighbors and reminding us that Christ is the source of all of this love.
